A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei, capturing the actor Matsumoto Koshirō II in a traditional kabuki role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts the kabuki actor Matsumoto Koshirō II. Shun'ei was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often captured the intensity of performers during the Edo period. The artist focuses on the actor's facial expression and posture, typical of the Katsukawa school's approach to portraiture.
The subject is dressed in a patterned kimono, featuring a grid design that contrasts with the striped trousers. Above the figure, a branch with small, pale blossoms hangs against a screen, providing a sense of interior space. The composition is balanced, with the actor positioned centrally. The colour palette remains restrained, utilising soft greens, muted yellows, and subtle pinks, which were common in prints of this era.
Shun'ei's work is characterised by a clear, confident line. He avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to direct the viewer's attention to the actor's characterisation. The print serves as a record of theatrical fashion and performance style in late 18th-century Japan. The signature of the artist appears in the lower right, alongside a publisher's mark. This piece is a representative example of the focus on individual actor identity that defined the later years of the Katsukawa school.
