This work depicts Pedro de Barberana y Aparregui, a member of the Order of Calatrava, captured in a full-length standing pose. The red cross of the Order of Calatrava, embroidered prominently on the chest of the doublet, provides the primary colour accent in the composition. Velázquez demonstrates his mastery of texture and light through the subtle rendering of the fabric. The heavy, dark cloth of the cloak and breeches absorbs light, while the white ruff at the neck provides a sharp, clean edge that frames the sitter's face. The subject stands with a sense of quiet authority, his posture relaxed yet formal.
