A refined portrait of the kabuki actor Iwai Kumesaburō II by Utagawa Kunisada, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Kumesaburō II, a figure of considerable renown in the Edo period theatre scene. Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most prolific designers of the nineteenth century, captures the actor in a seated pose, characteristic of the yakusha-e tradition. The subject is dressed in a deep teal kimono adorned with subtle floral motifs, contrasting with the patterned textile of the cushion upon which he rests. The composition utilises a significant amount of negative space, a common feature in Japanese scroll painting that directs the viewer's attention to the central figure.
Kunisada demonstrates his technical proficiency through the precise rendering of the actor's facial features and the delicate folds of the fabric. The use of ink and colour on silk provides a soft, matte finish that differs from the sharper lines found in woodblock prints of the same era. The actor's expression is composed, reflecting the stylised nature of kabuki performance. The surrounding silk mount, featuring a repeating pattern, frames the work, maintaining the traditional presentation of a kakemono. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of celebrity culture and visual art in nineteenth-century Japan, where actors were frequently the subjects of artistic documentation. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance individual likeness with the formal requirements of the genre.
