A striking 1921 woodcut portrait by German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, featuring angular lines and high-contrast graphic forms.
This woodcut, titled Portrait of David M., originates from the portfolio New European Graphics, Portfolio V: German Artists. Produced in 1921, the work demonstrates the characteristic approach of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a founding member of the Die Brücke group. Kirchner utilised the woodcut medium to explore psychological states through sharp, angular forms and high-contrast black and white imagery.
The portrait features a subject rendered with jagged, rhythmic lines that define the facial structure and the surrounding space. Kirchner avoids smooth transitions, opting instead for a series of short, directional gouges that create a sense of nervous energy. The background is not merely a void but a textured environment, with swirling, circular motifs that suggest a turbulent atmosphere. The subject's features are elongated and distorted, reflecting the Expressionist interest in conveying internal experience rather than objective reality.
Kirchner's technique involves removing material from the woodblock to leave raised areas that hold the ink. This process results in the stark, graphic quality seen here. The white lines, which are the areas cut away, act as active components of the composition, carving out the form of the sitter from the dark ink. This specific print is part of a broader effort by the artist to disseminate his work through portfolios, allowing his graphic style to reach a wider audience during the post-war period. The work remains a clear example of the artist's mature style, where the physical act of carving directly informs the final visual output, resulting in a raw and immediate representation of the human figure.
