Description
A 17th-century oil painting by Wallerant Vaillant shows a young aristocratic boy holding a falcon. The portrait captures a sense of youthful innocence and aristocratic refinement.
This oil on canvas portrait by Wallerant Vaillant depicts a young boy holding a falcon. Vaillant, a Dutch Golden Age painter, was known for his portraiture and printmaking. The boy, likely a member of the aristocracy, is dressed in a pink doublet with a brown cloak draped over his shoulder. His blond, curly hair frames a pale face with delicate features. The falcon, perched on the boy's gloved hand, is hooded and tethered, suggesting its use in falconry, a popular sport among the nobility. The composition is simple, with a dark background that throws the figures into sharp relief. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the boy's clothing, the falcon's feathers, and the soft light that illuminates their faces. The portrait captures a sense of youthful innocence and aristocratic refinement, reflecting the values and aesthetics of the Dutch Golden Age. Vaillant's skill in capturing likeness and texture makes this portrait a fine example of 17th-century Dutch portraiture.

He trained under Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and worked as a portraitist in Amsterdam, with extended stays in Paris from 1659 to 1664.
