A seventeenth-century portrait of Willem Frederik, Count of Nassau-Dietz, by the Dutch painter Wybrand de Geest (I).
This portrait by the Frisian painter Wybrand de Geest (I) depicts Willem Frederik, Count of Nassau-Dietz, during his youth. De Geest, who spent time in Italy before returning to Leeuwarden, became a sought-after portraitist for the Frisian nobility. His work often captures the specific social standing of his subjects through careful attention to attire and expression.
The subject is presented in a bust-length format, turned slightly to the viewer. He wears a broad, white lace collar, which contrasts with the darker tones of his armour and the muted background. The lace is rendered with precision, showing the technical skill required to depict such delicate textile work in oil. A golden sash crosses his chest, adding a touch of colour to the otherwise restrained palette. The background features gold-coloured lettering identifying the sitter, a common convention in seventeenth-century portraiture to ensure the identity of the nobility remained clear to future viewers.
De Geest employs a soft lighting scheme that models the face of the young Count, drawing attention to his features and the texture of his hair. The painting reflects the sober yet refined aesthetic preferred by the Dutch elite during this period. The composition is direct, focusing on the individual rather than elaborate surroundings. This print captures the tonal depth of the original panel, preserving the subtle transitions between the dark background and the illuminated face and collar. It is a representative example of the portraiture produced in the Northern Netherlands during the seventeenth century, documenting the appearance of a member of the House of Nassau.
