A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting a Polish rider and a Hungarian nobleman in traditional attire.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two distinct figures: a Polish rider and a Hungarian nobleman. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp, produced numerous series documenting the diverse costumes and social hierarchies of sixteenth-century Europe. These works functioned as visual catalogues for contemporaries, providing insight into the military and aristocratic fashions of the period.
The left figure, identified as 'Eques Polonus' or Polish rider, sits atop a horse, wearing elaborate armour and a plumed helmet. The right figure, though partially obscured by the condition of the paper, represents a Hungarian nobleman. Both figures are rendered with precise, controlled lines characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking. The artist focuses on the textures of the clothing, the decorative elements of the tack, and the specific silhouettes that defined the status of these individuals.
This print belongs to a broader tradition of costume books, which were popular among scholars, merchants, and travellers. These publications allowed individuals to study the appearance of foreign cultures without leaving their homes. The composition is straightforward, placing the subjects against a minimal ground to ensure the viewer focuses on the details of their attire. The work provides a glimpse into the sartorial conventions of the era, capturing the specific aesthetic choices of the Polish and Hungarian nobility. Despite the physical degradation of the paper, the remaining lines offer a clear view of the artist's technical skill and his commitment to accurate documentation. The print serves as a historical record of European fashion, reflecting the cultural exchanges that occurred across the continent during the Renaissance.
