A fine example of seventeenth-century Chinese calligraphy by Zheng Fu, featuring disciplined ink brushwork on paper.
This work by Zheng Fu (1622-1694) presents a fine example of late seventeenth-century Chinese calligraphy. Executed in ink on paper, the piece displays the controlled brushwork characteristic of the period. Zheng Fu, a scholar and official during the early Qing Dynasty, utilised a balanced script that prioritises clarity and structural integrity. The characters are arranged in a vertical format, a traditional choice for hanging scrolls that allows the viewer to follow the rhythm of the ink application from top to bottom.
The text itself functions as a poetic maxim, reflecting the philosophical interests of the literati class. The ink density varies across the strokes, showing the pressure applied by the brush against the absorbent paper surface. This variation provides a sense of movement within the static characters. The composition is anchored by the larger, central characters, while the smaller, more cursive script to the left provides a secondary layer of information, including the artist's signature and the date of creation. The presence of red seal impressions adds a visual counterpoint to the monochromatic ink, marking the work as a finished, authenticated piece.
In the context of Chinese art history, calligraphy is considered the highest form of visual expression. It requires a synthesis of physical discipline and intellectual preparation. Zheng Fu's approach here is measured, avoiding excessive flourish in favour of a disciplined, rhythmic execution. The paper has aged to a soft, neutral tone, which provides a quiet background for the dark ink. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of Chinese writing systems or the aesthetic traditions of the Qing period. It offers a direct view into the practice of a scholar-official, where the act of writing was as much a meditative exercise as it was a means of recording philosophical thought.
