A pair of traditional Chinese calligraphy scrolls by the 17th-century scholar Zhou Lianggong, featuring balanced ink characters on aged paper.
This work presents a pair of vertical hanging scrolls featuring traditional Chinese calligraphy by Zhou Lianggong, a scholar-official and art critic active during the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties. The characters are executed in a steady, balanced script that reflects the disciplined training of a literati artist. The ink remains dark against the aged paper, showing the controlled pressure of the brush.
Zhou Lianggong is recognised for his contributions to the study of painting and his extensive collection of contemporary works. His own calligraphic output often adheres to the classical standards of the period, prioritising clarity and structural integrity. The vertical format, known as a couplet, is a standard arrangement in Chinese interior decoration, intended to be displayed on either side of a doorway or a central painting. The composition relies on the rhythmic spacing of the characters, which are arranged in a single column on each scroll.
The red seals visible on the paper indicate the artist's personal marks, which serve to authenticate the work and provide a visual counterpoint to the black ink. The paper itself has acquired a warm, neutral tone over the centuries, providing a quiet background that allows the bold strokes of the characters to remain the primary focus. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the 17th-century Chinese scholar class, where the mastery of the brush was considered an essential skill for any educated individual. The simplicity of the presentation reflects a preference for understated elegance, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation in favour of pure form and textual meaning.
