This work is a fragment from the Shinsen rōeishū, or Newly Selected Collection of Poems to Sing, a significant anthology of Chinese and Japanese verse compiled during the Heian period. The calligraphy is attributed to the court noble and poet Fujiwara no Mototoshi, a figure of considerable influence in the literary circles of his time. The text focuses on the arrival of autumn, a recurring theme in classical Japanese poetry that evokes a sense of seasonal transition and melancholy.
The script displays the fluid, cursive style characteristic of the period, where characters are linked with rhythmic grace. The ink varies in density, creating a visual texture that complements the paper. The paper itself is decorated with scattered flecks of mica or similar mineral pigments, a common practice in aristocratic manuscript production to provide a subtle, shimmering background for the written word. This specific piece is known as a Yamana-gire, one of the surviving portions of a larger scroll that was later divided.
As a specimen of Japanese calligraphy, this fragment demonstrates the balance between the structured nature of the Chinese characters and the expressive freedom of the kana script. The arrangement of the columns shows a deliberate approach to spacing, allowing the ink to breathe across the page.
