A refined Japanese surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a still life of brushes and decorative paper ornaments.
This surimono print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai features a collection of objects associated with the scholar or artist. Surimono were privately commissioned woodblock prints, often distributed among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. These works frequently combined refined calligraphy with imagery that alluded to seasonal themes or the specific interests of the patron.
In this composition, Shinsai arranges brushes, patterned paper, and decorative ornaments upon a flat surface. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the textures of the folded paper and the bristles of the brushes. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted reds to create a sense of balance. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print integrates the visual elements with the literary content, a common practice in the surimono format. The arrangement of the objects is ornamental, prioritising a decorative balance over realistic spatial depth. The presence of the circular motif and the patterned textiles suggests a focus on craftsmanship and the material culture of the period.
Shinsai was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work often reflects the technical precision associated with that school. This print demonstrates the high level of printing skill required for surimono, which often utilised special techniques such as embossing or metallic pigments. The composition avoids clutter, allowing the viewer to appreciate the individual forms of the brushes and the geometric patterns on the paper. It functions as a quiet observation of the tools of creative expression, presented with the understated elegance characteristic of the genre.
