A fine art print of a fan painting by Ni Yuanlu, featuring expressive, angular calligraphy in ink on a gold-flecked ground.
This fan painting displays the distinctive calligraphic style of Ni Yuanlu, a scholar-official active during the final years of the Ming Dynasty. The work features a poem composed in a seven-syllable meter, rendered in a vigorous, angular script that deviates from the more conventional, rounded forms favoured by his contemporaries. Ni Yuanlu is recognised for his unconventional approach to brushwork, often employing sharp, sudden transitions and a dry-brush technique that imparts a sense of tension and kinetic energy to the characters.
The text is set against a gold-flecked paper ground, a common format for fan paintings of this era. The contrast between the dark, saturated ink and the metallic surface creates a visual rhythm that guides the eye across the fan's curved surface. Several red seals are visible in the lower left, providing a balance to the density of the ink characters and marking the provenance of the piece.
Ni Yuanlu's calligraphy reflects the turbulent political climate of the seventeenth century. His style is often described as idiosyncratic, prioritising individual expression over strict adherence to traditional models. The characters appear to lean and stretch, suggesting a deliberate rejection of static balance. This piece offers a clear example of the expressive potential of Chinese calligraphy, where the physical movement of the brush serves as a direct record of the artist's temperament and artistic intent. The work remains a primary example of the late Ming aesthetic, which valued personal character and emotional honesty in both poetry and the visual arts.
