A classic Impressionist seascape by Claude Monet, 'Clifftop Walk at Pourville' captures a coastal scene with loose brushstrokes and a vibrant colour palette, depicting figures on a cliff overlooking the sea.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism, the art movement that shifted painting from studio work to plein air observation. Monet's paintings often depict fleeting moments of light and atmosphere, captured with loose brushstrokes and pure colour. His series of paintings of water lilies, haystacks, and the Rouen Cathedral are among the most recognisable images in Western art. This painting depicts a view from a clifftop overlooking the sea at Pourville, a coastal village in Normandy, France. Two figures, likely women, stand on the grassy cliff, one holding a parasol. The sea is dotted with sailboats, and the sky is filled with clouds. Monet's use of colour and light creates a sense of movement and atmosphere. The painting is characterised by short, broken brushstrokes and a palette of blues, greens, and yellows. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: the sky, the sea, and the clifftop. The figures are small in relation to the overall scene, which emphasises the vastness of nature.
