A traditional ink on silk painting by Liu Shiru, depicting a plum branch in winter. This piece captures the delicate balance of ink wash techniques.
Liu Shiru, a painter active during the Qing Dynasty, produced this work using ink on silk. The composition focuses on a single, gnarled plum branch extending across the vertical format. The artist employs varying ink tones to suggest the texture of the bark and the delicate nature of the blossoms. The presence of snow is indicated through negative space and subtle washes, creating a sense of winter stillness.
In traditional Chinese painting, the plum blossom is a subject of significant cultural weight. It is one of the Four Gentlemen, representing resilience and perseverance because it blooms in the cold of winter. Liu Shiru captures this quality through the contrast between the sturdy, dark trunk and the fragile, light-coloured flowers. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the technical training typical of the period. The ink application allows for a range of grey tones, providing depth without the use of colour.
This print captures the original silk texture and the subtle tonal shifts of the ink. The composition is balanced, with the branch anchoring the visual field while the smaller twigs reach towards the edges. The calligraphy in the upper corner provides context and identifies the artist, maintaining the integrity of the original hanging scroll format. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of East Asian ink wash techniques and the traditional iconography of the natural world.
