A traditional Chinese ink and colour painting on silk depicting a red-crowned crane beneath a flowering prunus tree, dated 1821.
This work by Xiang He, dating to 1821, belongs to the traditional genre of bird-and-flower painting. The composition features a red-crowned crane positioned beneath the boughs of a blossoming prunus tree. The crane, a symbol of longevity in Chinese culture, is rendered with careful attention to its plumage and posture. The artist employs ink washes to define the bird's form, contrasting the dark, sweeping feathers of the tail with the lighter tones of the neck and body.
The prunus tree, or plum blossom, arches across the upper portion of the frame. Its branches are depicted with calligraphic brushwork, showing the gnarled texture of the bark. Small, delicate pink blossoms are scattered along the limbs, providing a subtle colour accent against the muted, aged tone of the silk background. The lower section of the painting includes rock formations, which anchor the scene and provide a sense of grounded stability.
Xiang He includes a vertical column of calligraphy in the upper-left quadrant, which integrates text with the visual elements of the painting. The red seal mark provides a final point of visual balance. The overall approach is one of restraint, focusing on the relationship between the crane and the flora. The use of negative space allows the subject to occupy the composition without clutter, a characteristic feature of this period of Chinese art. This print captures the tonal variations of the original ink and silk, preserving the balance between the fluid brushstrokes of the tree and the more structured form of the crane.
