A delicate fan painting by Yan Hui depicting plum blossoms in ink and light colour on silk, capturing the quiet stillness of a moonlit night.
This circular composition, or fan painting, captures a branch of plum blossoms emerging from a misty, atmospheric background. Yan Hui, an artist active during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, employs a restrained palette to evoke the quiet stillness of a moonlit night. The plum tree, a traditional subject in East Asian art, represents resilience and the arrival of spring, as its flowers bloom while snow still covers the ground.
The ink wash technique creates a sense of depth, with the foreground branches rendered in darker, sharper strokes, while the distant blossoms fade into the silk support. This use of negative space allows the viewer to focus on the delicate structure of the petals and the gnarled texture of the wood. The circular format, typical of fan paintings from this period, frames the subject in a way that suggests a glimpse into a larger, unseen world. The composition avoids clutter, maintaining a balance between the solid forms of the branches and the emptiness of the surrounding space.
Yan Hui is often associated with more dramatic figure paintings, yet this work demonstrates his ability to handle subtle, lyrical subjects with equal precision. The application of ink on silk requires a confident hand, as corrections are difficult to make. Here, the artist demonstrates control over the brush, varying the pressure to suggest both the fragility of the blossoms and the strength of the boughs. The work remains a fine example of the aesthetic values prevalent during the Yuan period, where the focus shifted towards personal expression and the study of nature through a minimalist lens. The muted tones and soft transitions between light and shadow create a contemplative mood, suitable for a study or a quiet living space.
