A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a woman on a boat at the Sumida River. This work belongs to the series Annual Events at Famous Places in the Eastern Capital.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his series Annual Events at Famous Places in the Eastern Capital. The scene depicts a woman standing on a wooden boat on the Sumida River. She wears a kimono with a large brown and white chequered pattern. Her dark hair is styled in a traditional bun held by a simple hairpin. She looks back towards the riverbank while holding the hem of her garment. The fabric of her kimono folds around her feet as she balances on the wooden deck. In the background, a large wooden bridge spans the water. Many small figures walk across the structure, suggesting a busy urban environment. Several boats navigate the river, including a small skiff with three passengers. The sky is a deep blue, transitioning to a darker shade at the top. Stylised white and red shapes appear in the upper left corner. These represent either fireworks or falling blossoms. Willow branches hang from the top of the frame, creating a natural border for the scene. Hiroshige used the ukiyo-e technique to create this print. This involved carving separate wooden blocks for each colour and printing them onto paper. The artist focused on the daily life and seasonal customs of Edo. The Sumida River was a popular location for leisure activities. This print captures a specific moment during the third month of the lunar calendar. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is visible in the sky and water. The composition places the figure in the foreground to create a sense of scale. The bridge and distant boats provide depth to the print. Hiroshige often used architectural elements to frame his subjects. The contrast between the bold pattern of the kimono and the muted tones of the river creates a balanced visual effect. This print is a typical example of the artist's output from the mid-nineteenth century.
