A detailed botanical study from Maria Sibylla Merian's 1679 publication, featuring a woven basket of flowers rendered with scientific precision.

This botanical study originates from Maria Sibylla Merian's seminal work, Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung und sonderbare Blumennahrung (The Wondrous Transformation of Caterpillars and their Strange Food of Flowers). Published in three volumes between 1679 and 1683, this collection documents the life cycles of insects alongside their host plants. Merian, a naturalist and artist, observed these specimens directly, moving away from the common practice of copying existing illustrations. The composition features a woven basket filled with a variety of blooms, including irises, tulips, and carnations. The arrangement is balanced, with the verticality of the blue iris and the striped tulip providing structure against the rounded forms of the central peonies and roses. Merian employs a precise, observational technique, capturing the specific textures of petals, leaves, and the wicker basket. The colour palette is varied, reflecting the natural diversity of the specimens she collected and studied. Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused solely on the aesthetic qualities of flora, Merian integrated scientific observation into her artistic practice. Her work provides a record of European botanical life during the late seventeenth century. The clarity of her line work and the careful application of watercolour allow for the identification of individual species, demonstrating her technical proficiency. This print represents the intersection of scientific inquiry and artistic documentation, a hallmark of Merian's career. The work remains a reference for those interested in the history of natural science and the development of botanical illustration as a discipline.
