A precise botanical study of the Gladiolus cardinalis, rendered in watercolour by the Dutch explorer and naturalist Robert Jacob Gordon.
This botanical study depicts the Gladiolus cardinalis, a species native to the Cape region of South Africa. Robert Jacob Gordon, a Dutch explorer and soldier, produced a significant body of work documenting the flora and fauna of the Cape during his time as commander of the garrison in Cape Town. His approach to illustration prioritises scientific accuracy, capturing the structural details of the plant from the corm and root system to the delicate petals of the flower.
The composition is clean and focused, set against a plain background to ensure the viewer observes the specific characteristics of the specimen. The artist uses a controlled application of watercolour, layering soft greens for the foliage and deeper crimson tones for the petals. The fine lines define the veins of the leaves and the subtle curvature of the stem, demonstrating a disciplined hand typical of eighteenth-century natural history documentation. The inclusion of the root system at the base provides a complete view of the plant, which was common practice for researchers aiming to provide a comprehensive record for European botanical collections.
Gordon's work remains a valuable resource for understanding the historical biodiversity of the Cape. His drawings were not intended for decorative display but rather as precise records of the natural world. The paper shows signs of age, with light foxing and discolouration that speak to its history as a working document. This print offers a glimpse into the methodical process of early scientific exploration, where the artist acted as both observer and recorder. The simplicity of the presentation allows the form of the Gladiolus cardinalis to remain the primary focus, free from unnecessary embellishment or stylistic artifice.
