A classic Ukiyo-e triptych by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting a historical cherry blossom viewing party in Higashiyama.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicts a historical scene involving Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the powerful daimyo and unifier of Japan, alongside his consorts during a cherry blossom viewing excursion at Higashiyama. Utamaro, a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, is recognised for his ability to capture the grace and poise of his subjects. In this composition, the figures are arranged across a triptych format, allowing for a narrative flow that moves from the standing figures on the left to the seated and interacting group on the right.
The scene is set against a backdrop of rolling hills and blossoming trees, typical of the seasonal celebrations popularised during the Edo period. The artist employs a balanced use of line and colour to define the elaborate patterns of the kimonos and the subtle expressions of the women. The inclusion of a small child and the various domestic items, such as the low table and lanterns, provides a sense of intimacy to the historical subject matter. Utamaro uses a refined colour palette, relying on soft earth tones and muted pinks to evoke the atmosphere of a spring day in Kyoto.
As a work of the Ukiyo-e tradition, this print reflects the cultural preoccupation with both historical figures and the aesthetic appreciation of nature. The composition avoids excessive clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the interactions between the figures. The print serves as a record of the artistic techniques prevalent in late 18th-century Japan, particularly in the production of multi-sheet prints that allowed for larger, more complex scenes. The attention to detail in the textile patterns and the varied postures of the women demonstrate the technical skill required in the carving and printing process of the era.
