A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers resting at an inn in Shimosuwa, from the Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaidō series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a scene at a post station in Shimosuwa, a stop along the Kisokaidō route. The Kisokaidō was one of the five major roads connecting Edo to Kyoto during the Edo period. Hiroshige produced this series in collaboration with Keisai Eisen, documenting the various stops along the mountain path. The composition offers a view into the interior of a local inn. Travellers are shown gathered around low tables, eating and resting after their journey. The open architecture of the building allows the viewer to observe the domestic activities within, while a separate area to the left shows a person bathing in a wooden tub. The use of space is characteristic of Hiroshige, balancing the architectural lines of the inn with the relaxed postures of the figures. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted blues, and the natural colour of the paper. The print captures the daily life of common people, a frequent subject in Ukiyo-e art. The attention to detail, from the patterned textiles to the simple wooden structures, provides a glimpse into the travel culture of nineteenth-century Japan. This work is part of a larger series that documents the geography and social atmosphere of the route, reflecting the artist's interest in the intersection of human activity and the environment.
