A 1740 woodblock print by Nishikawa Sukenobu illustrating the classic Japanese literary work, Essays in Idleness.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Ehon tsurezuregusa', a collection of illustrations by Nishikawa Sukenobu published in 1740. The work interprets the 'Tsurezuregusa', or 'Essays in Idleness', a classic piece of Japanese literature written by the monk Yoshida Kenko in the 14th century. Sukenobu was a prolific artist based in Kyoto, known for his contributions to the development of the illustrated book format during the Edo period.
The composition displays a scene of architectural and human interaction, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of 18th-century woodblock printing. The artist employs a bird-eye perspective to depict the structure, allowing for a clear view of the figures gathered both inside and outside the building. The figures are drawn with attention to period-appropriate attire and social gestures, reflecting the daily life and cultural atmosphere of the time. The integration of calligraphy directly into the image space is a standard feature of the 'ehon' (picture book) tradition, where text and image function as a unified narrative unit.
Sukenobu's style is marked by a balance between the architectural rigidity of the buildings and the fluid, organic forms of the human figures. The print captures a moment of social observation, typical of the themes found in Kenko's original essays, which often focused on the transience of life and the nuances of human behaviour. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print preserves the monochromatic aesthetic of the original woodblock, allowing for an examination of the artist's technical skill in creating depth and texture through line alone. This piece offers a window into the intersection of classical literature and popular visual culture in mid-Edo Japan.
