A woodblock print from the 1736 book Ehon Himetsubaki by Nishikawa Sukenobu, featuring figures in a garden setting with traditional calligraphy.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book titled Ehon Himetsubaki, or Picture Book: Camellia, published in 1736. Nishikawa Sukenobu was a prolific artist based in Kyoto, known for his contributions to the development of book illustration during the Edo period. Unlike many of his contemporaries in Edo who focused on single-sheet prints of actors or courtesans, Sukenobu specialised in ehon, or picture books, which integrated narrative text with visual imagery.
The composition displays two distinct scenes presented side by side, a common format for Japanese book design of the eighteenth century. On the left, a woman stands near a wooden fence, her posture suggesting a moment of quiet observation. On the right, a male figure in traditional courtly attire walks through a garden setting, accompanied by a pine tree. The lines are thin and precise, characteristic of the woodblock carving techniques employed to replicate the artist's brushwork. The inclusion of calligraphic text within the frame provides context to the figures, linking the visual elements to the literary themes of the period.
Sukenobu's work is noted for its focus on the daily lives and fashions of the urban population. His figures are rendered with a sense of grace, often depicted in settings that balance architectural elements with natural motifs. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of eighteenth-century woodblock prints, with a warm, off-white tone that complements the black ink. This print offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the Kyoto art scene, where the influence of classical literature remained strong alongside the emerging popular culture of the Ukiyo-e movement. The print serves as a record of historical costume and social interaction, captured through the medium of the printed page.
