This work by Kano Shōei, a member of the influential Kano school of painting, displays the characteristic aesthetic of the Momoyama period. The composition features a pair of pheasants perched upon a rocky outcrop, positioned near a flowing stream. Above them, a gnarled tree branch extends across the frame, laden with foliage and blossoms. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, typical of the period's interest in nature as a subject for decorative screens and hanging scrolls.
The Kano school was known for its ability to bridge the gap between the monochrome ink traditions of earlier eras and the more decorative, colour-based styles that gained popularity among the warrior class. In this piece, the use of colour is restrained, allowing the ink-drawn contours of the rocks and tree bark to provide structure. The pheasants are rendered with attention to their plumage, while the surrounding elements suggest a seasonal transition. The silk support provides a subtle texture that complements the application of mineral pigments and ink.
Kano Shōei, the son of Kano Motonobu, maintained the technical standards of his family workshop while adapting to the changing tastes of his patrons.
