Kano Einō, a member of the influential Kano school of painting, produced this study of a flowering plum branch during the 17th century. The work reflects the technical rigour and aesthetic values of the Edo period, where ink wash painting remained a primary mode of expression for the scholar-painter class. The composition focuses on the sweeping, organic curve of a single branch, which descends from the upper right corner to dominate the vertical space of the paper.

The artist employs varying ink densities to suggest depth and texture. The main branch is rendered with broad, wet brushstrokes that convey weight and age, while the smaller twigs and blossoms are depicted with lighter, more precise lines.
