A delicate woodblock print by Yanagawa Shigemasa featuring peonies and iris, executed in the traditional kacho-ga style of the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Yanagawa Shigemasa belongs to the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. Shigemasa, a student of the celebrated Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates a refined approach to botanical illustration through this composition. The work features a cluster of peonies, rendered with soft, layered petals in shades of white and muted red, alongside the slender, upright forms of iris leaves and a single bloom.
The composition is vertical, typical of the surimono or narrow-format prints produced during the Edo period. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the structure of the flowers, while the colour palette remains restrained, relying on subtle washes of green and earthy tones to ground the subject. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the print integrates the visual elements with the literary tradition, a common practice in Japanese printmaking where poetry and image share the same space.
Shigemasa captures the specific textures of the flora, from the ruffled edges of the peony blossoms to the sharp, blade-like quality of the iris foliage. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the natural forms to dictate the balance of the image. This piece reflects the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour block is carefully aligned to produce the final image. The paper texture remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the print that complements the organic subject matter. As a representative example of early nineteenth-century Japanese print culture, this work provides a clear view of the aesthetic priorities of the period, where observation of nature is filtered through a highly stylised and disciplined artistic lens.
