A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring delicate peony blossoms and a butterfly in the traditional kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to a series of large-format flower studies, a genre known as kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower pictures. Hokusai, active during the Edo period, applied his mastery of line and composition to capture the ephemeral nature of flora. The print features oversized peony blossoms, rendered with delicate outlines and subtle colour gradients, set against a pale, warm background. A single butterfly hovers to the right, providing a sense of movement and scale to the composition.
The artist employs a refined palette, balancing the soft pinks and whites of the petals with deep, muted greens of the foliage. The composition avoids excessive clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the organic forms of the flowers. Hokusai uses the woodblock medium to achieve clean, precise edges, which define the structure of the leaves and the layered petals of the peonies. The placement of the butterfly creates a diagonal tension, guiding the eye across the frame.
This work reflects the artist's interest in natural observation, a theme he explored throughout his career. By isolating the subject against a neutral ground, Hokusai removes the need for a complex setting, focusing instead on the botanical accuracy and the aesthetic balance of the arrangement. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Japanese woodblock tradition, where the interaction between the carved lines and the printed colour creates a sense of depth and texture. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to elevate a simple subject through careful observation and disciplined technique.
