A delicate ink wash study of a Pekingese dog, executed in the traditional style of the Hokusai school.
This ink wash study captures a Pekingese dog with the characteristic economy of line associated with the Hokusai school. The artist employs varying densities of ink to define the texture of the animal's coat, contrasting the soft, fluffy fur around the head and neck with the more controlled, sweeping strokes of the tail. The dog is positioned in a seated posture, its gaze directed downwards, creating a sense of quiet observation.
Beside the animal, a small sprig of chrysanthemum is rendered with minimal brushwork. This inclusion provides a sense of scale and grounds the subject within the natural world, a common motif in Japanese art of the Edo period. The composition is sparse, prioritising the negative space of the paper to draw attention to the form of the dog. The brushwork is fluid, demonstrating the technical proficiency expected of artists working within the tradition established by Katsushika Hokusai.
Such studies were often produced as preparatory sketches or as part of an artist's model book, intended to provide reference material for larger compositions. The focus here is on the observation of form and movement rather than a highly finished narrative scene. The monochrome palette relies on the subtle graduation of grey tones, from the deep black of the ink used for the floral elements to the lighter, diluted washes that define the dog's features. This print offers a glimpse into the observational practices of nineteenth-century Japanese artists, where the study of domestic animals was treated with the same attention to detail as more traditional subjects.
