A delicate fan painting by Shibata Zeshin, capturing a resting cat through fluid, minimalist ink brushwork.
Shibata Zeshin, a master of both lacquerware and painting, produced this work in the format of a folding fan. The composition demonstrates his ability to capture character through minimal brushwork. The cat, rendered with fluid, calligraphic ink strokes, occupies the upper-left portion of the fan, leaving the remaining space open. This use of negative space is a hallmark of Zeshin's approach, which draws upon the traditions of the Shijo school while maintaining a distinct, personal economy of form.
The subject is depicted in a relaxed, almost human-like posture, with its head resting on its paws. Zeshin uses subtle washes of ink and light colour to define the animal's form, avoiding heavy outlines in favour of suggestive, gestural marks. The cat's expression is one of quiet observation, typical of the artist's interest in the everyday behaviours of animals. The fan format itself imposes a specific constraint on the composition, which Zeshin navigates by aligning the subject with the curve of the paper.
Zeshin was active during the transition from the Edo to the Meiji period, a time when Japanese art began to engage with new influences while maintaining traditional techniques. His work is noted for its technical precision and its departure from the more rigid conventions of earlier schools. This piece reflects his interest in the natural world, presented with a sense of spontaneity. The ink work is balanced by the deliberate placement of his signature and seal, which anchor the composition. This print captures the original texture of the paper and the nuanced ink tones, providing a clear view of the artist's brush control and his ability to convey personality through simple, direct observation.
