A Neo-Impressionist landscape by Maximilien Luce, 'Paysage près de Méréville' features a field and tree rendered with small brushstrokes of colour, creating a tranquil and harmonious scene.
Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art. He was a prominent figure in the Parisian art scene and a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. His work often depicted urban scenes, industrial landscapes, and scenes of working-class life, rendered in a pointillist style. Luce's political leanings towards anarchism also influenced his artistic subjects. He served as president of the Société des Artistes Indépendants from 1909 until his death in 1941. 'Paysage près de Méréville' is a landscape painting that exemplifies Luce's Neo-Impressionist technique. The scene depicts a field with a prominent tree in the foreground, set against a backdrop of rolling hills and a cloudy sky. The painting is characterised by its use of small, distinct brushstrokes of colour, which create a shimmering effect when viewed from a distance. The colour palette includes greens, yellows, blues, and browns, which evoke the natural environment. The composition is balanced, with the tree serving as a vertical element that anchors the scene. The overall impression is one of tranquility and harmony.
