Vasily Polenov (1844-1919) was a Russian painter associated with the передвижники (Peredvizhniki, or Wanderers) movement, which sought to depict Russian life and history with realism and social commentary. He is also known for his landscapes and biblical scenes, often painted with a sense of quiet contemplation.
