A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu featuring two oxen beneath a flowering plum tree, rendered in the delicate nishiki-e style.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts two oxen, one black and one white, positioned before a flowering plum tree. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This work demonstrates his characteristic approach to form and space, favouring a delicate balance between the subjects and the surrounding environment.
The composition is defined by the contrast between the dark, solid form of the black ox and the lighter, more fluid lines of the white ox. The plum tree, rendered with stylised branches and blossoms, provides a vertical element that anchors the scene. The background remains minimal, a common trait in Harunobu's work, which directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the animals. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones for the ground and soft washes for the sky, allowing the red and white of the plum blossoms to provide necessary visual accents.
Harunobu's work often drew upon classical themes and literary references, yet his depictions of animals and daily life possess a distinct clarity. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical skill required for the multi-block printing process of the Edo period. By focusing on the physical presence of the oxen, the artist creates a scene that is both observational and decorative. The print serves as an example of the refinement achieved in Japanese printmaking during the mid-eighteenth century, where the integration of colour and line reached a high level of sophistication. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the period, where natural subjects were interpreted through a lens of artistic convention and technical precision.
