An intricate seventeenth-century etching by Jean Lepautre, depicting a decorative oval mirror frame featuring the mythological figures of Apollo and Cyparissus.
This etching by Jean Lepautre depicts an elaborate oval mirror frame, a common subject in his extensive body of work documenting French decorative arts during the seventeenth century. Lepautre was a prolific designer whose prints provided templates for craftsmen, cabinetmakers, and architects across Europe. His work captures the aesthetic preferences of the Louis XIV period, characterised by a synthesis of classical mythology and heavy ornamental detail.
The central oval mirror frame is decorated with putti and foliage, enclosing a scene featuring the mythological figures of Apollo and Cyparissus. Below the mirror, a console table stands on ornate legs, supported by figures. A male figure leans against the table, holding a decorative vase, while a statue on a pedestal occupies the right side of the composition. The background features a striped wall treatment, providing a sense of interior space typical of Lepautre's architectural designs.
Lepautre utilised a precise etching technique to define the textures of stone, fabric, and metal. The lines are controlled and rhythmic, creating a clear distinction between the foreground figures and the decorative elements. His approach to composition relies on symmetry and balance, reflecting the formal requirements of Baroque interior design. This print is part of a larger series of designs for mirrors and furniture, which were widely circulated and used as references for high-end interior decoration. The inclusion of classical narrative within a functional object design demonstrates the period's tendency to integrate fine art with domestic utility. The work provides a clear view into the decorative vocabulary of the era, focusing on the integration of sculpture and furniture design.
