A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jean Lepautre, depicting a formal chimneypiece design with a classical oval medallion.
This etching by Jean Lepautre demonstrates the formal rigour of French Baroque interior design. Lepautre, a prolific draughtsman and engraver, produced numerous suites of prints documenting architectural elements, furniture, and decorative motifs. These works were widely circulated among craftsmen and architects across Europe, providing a standardised visual vocabulary for the period.
The composition depicts a chimneypiece, or 'onderboezem', featuring a central oval medallion. Within this frame, a figure is shown working at an anvil, a classical motif often associated with Vulcan or allegorical representations of industry. The medallion is flanked by putti and suspended within a structured architectural frame, adorned with swags and foliage. Below the medallion, a console bracket provides a transition to the fireplace opening, which is rendered with precise cross-hatching to suggest depth and shadow.
Lepautre employs a disciplined use of line to define the textures of stone, metal, and fabric. The surrounding panelling is decorated with repeating wave-like patterns, typical of the period's preference for symmetry and order. The print serves as a record of the high-quality craftsmanship expected in royal and aristocratic residences of the seventeenth century. By focusing on the structural and decorative logic of the fireplace, the artist provides a clear view of how individual elements contribute to a unified interior scheme. This print is a characteristic example of the graphic output that defined the aesthetic of the Louis XIV era, prioritising clarity of form and classical balance.
