An early eighteenth-century Japanese woodblock print depicting the kabuki characters Osome and Hisamatsu, rendered in the benizuri-e style.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts the popular kabuki theatre characters Osome and Hisamatsu. The work belongs to the benizuri-e tradition, a style of early colour printing that utilised a limited palette of pink (beni) and green applied to a black-and-white ink base. Toshinobu, a member of the Okumura school, was active during the early eighteenth century and contributed to the development of multi-colour printing techniques in Edo period Japan.
The composition features two figures in a domestic setting. Osome stands, holding a small object, while Hisamatsu sits before a box, his posture suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation or interaction. The artist employs clean, firm lines to define the contours of the figures and their elaborate kimono patterns. The use of space is balanced, with the figures occupying the foreground against a simplified architectural backdrop. Calligraphic elements, including the artist's signature and text blocks, are integrated into the design, a common feature of ukiyo-e prints intended to provide context or identify the actors portrayed.
The colour scheme is restrained, relying on the interplay between the warm tones of the garments and the neutral paper ground. The patterns on the clothing, featuring geometric shapes and floral motifs, demonstrate the attention to detail characteristic of the period's fashion and textile design. This print serves as an example of the early efforts by Japanese printmakers to move beyond monochrome ink impressions, experimenting with colour to add visual interest to theatrical subjects. The work remains a representative specimen of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-Edo era, focusing on the depiction of popular culture and the theatre through the medium of the woodblock print.
