A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, depicting the legendary Yaoya Oshichi with a cherry branch in a hand-coloured style.
This woodblock print depicts the legendary figure Yaoya Oshichi, a young woman from the Edo period who became a popular subject in Japanese literature and theatre. Okumura Toshinobu, a member of the Okumura school, captures her in a graceful pose, holding a flowering cherry branch. The work is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where hand-applied pigments and sometimes glue were used to create a glossy, dark effect on specific areas of the composition.
The figure wears a kimono decorated with floral motifs, rendered with clear, confident outlines typical of early eighteenth-century ukiyo-e. The composition is balanced, with the cherry branch providing a natural frame for the subject. A small slip of paper, or tanzaku, hangs from the branch, bearing calligraphy that adds a narrative element to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones, muted yellows, and soft oranges, which have aged to provide the warm, aged paper tone seen today.
Okumura Toshinobu was active during the formative years of the ukiyo-e genre. His work often focused on actors and beautiful women, known as bijin-ga. This print reflects the aesthetic priorities of the time, where the focus remained on the elegance of the figure and the decorative quality of the garments. The lack of complex background elements ensures the viewer concentrates on the posture and the symbolic nature of the cherry blossoms, which represent the fleeting beauty of life. This print provides a glimpse into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan, where historical and literary figures were frequently reimagined for a growing urban audience interested in theatre and fashion.
