Roelant Savery (1576-1639) was a Flemish painter of the Dutch Golden Age, celebrated for his vibrant and imaginative landscapes. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on portraiture or genre scenes, Savery dedicated himself to capturing the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Born in Kortrijk, he moved to the Dutch Republic as a child, and later travelled extensively, including a pivotal period in Prague as court artist to Emperor Rudolf II. This exposure to the Emperor's menagerie and the Bohemian landscape profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Savery is best known for his idyllic, often fantastical, landscapes teeming with animals and lush vegetation. His masterpiece, *Dodo*, painted around 1626, is not only a detailed depiction of the now-extinct bird but also a poignant reminder of humanity's impact on the environment. Other notable works include *Landscape with Animals* and numerous vibrant floral still lifes, demonstrating his versatility and keen eye for detail. Savery's paintings are characterised by their bright colours, intricate detail, and a sense of joyous abundance. Despite his success and the popularity of his work, Savery's later life was marked by personal struggles. He declared bankruptcy in 1638, a year before his death in Utrecht. Today, Roelant Savery's art continues to enchant viewers with its vibrant celebration of nature and its enduring message of ecological awareness, securing his place as a unique voice within Dutch Golden Age painting and a favourite for fine art print collectors.
