A serene 1930 woodblock print by Hasui Kawase, capturing the quiet atmosphere of Omori Beach under a night sky.
Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1930. The work captures a quiet, nocturnal scene at Omori Beach, a location that was once a coastal area near Tokyo. The composition relies on a cool, monochromatic blue palette, which effectively conveys the stillness of the night air. Light serves as the primary narrative element here. The soft, golden glow emanating from the windows of the houses and the reflection of lights upon the water provide a contrast to the deep shadows of the shoreline. A lone figure holding an umbrella stands on a small wooden pier, adding a sense of human presence to the otherwise desolate coastal view. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Shin-hanga style, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western principles of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. Kawase was known for his travels across Japan, documenting the changing face of the country during the early twentieth century. His prints often focus on the intersection of traditional architecture and the natural environment. In this specific work, the texture of the water and the silhouettes of the buildings are rendered with careful attention to the grain and layering of the woodblocks. The result is a quiet, contemplative image that avoids theatricality in favour of a measured observation of place and time. This print remains an example of the artist's ability to translate the fleeting qualities of light into the physical medium of the woodblock.
