A nocturnal woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika, capturing the atmospheric glow of fireflies near Tennoji during the Meiji period.
This woodblock print captures a nocturnal scene at Tennoji, rendered with the atmospheric sensitivity characteristic of Kobayashi Kiyochika. During the Meiji period, Japanese printmaking began to integrate Western techniques of light and shadow, a style often termed kosen-ga or light-ray pictures. Kiyochika was a primary figure in this transition, moving away from the flat, bold colours of traditional ukiyo-e towards a more nuanced depiction of light. The composition focuses on the contrast between the dark, moody environment and the soft illumination provided by fireflies and the glowing interior of a nearby building. The trees are silhouetted against a deep, twilight sky, their forms softened by the darkness. The fireflies appear as small, flickering points of light, scattered across the lower portion of the image and reflecting faintly upon the water. A solitary figure holding a lantern stands upon a small bridge to the right, adding a sense of human presence to the quiet, evening setting. The print demonstrates a sophisticated use of bokashi, a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock to create smooth transitions in tone. This method allows for the subtle rendering of the night air, which feels heavy and damp. The interior light, emanating from behind a screen, provides a warm, golden counterpoint to the cool, dark blues and greys that dominate the rest of the scene. By focusing on the interplay of light sources, the artist creates a sense of stillness and contemplation. This work reflects the changing aesthetic priorities of the late nineteenth century, where the focus shifted towards capturing the specific mood of a moment rather than purely decorative or narrative subjects. The print remains a fine example of the technical skill involved in Meiji-era woodblock production.
