Ohara Koson
A refined shin-hanga woodblock print by Ohara Koson, featuring a magpie amidst blooming pink and white magnolia flowers against a soft green background.
Ohara Koson, a master of the kacho-ga genre, produced this woodblock print during the early twentieth century. The composition focuses on a magpie perched upon a magnolia branch, surrounded by a mixture of open white flowers, a large pink bloom, and numerous closed buds. The artist employs a pale, soft green background that provides a neutral stage for the botanical elements, allowing the colours of the bird and the petals to remain the primary focus. Koson demonstrates his technical precision through the clean lines of the branches and the careful shading of the bird's plumage. The magpie, rendered with a dark head and blue-toned wings, leans forward as if observing the blossoms below. The magnolia flowers are depicted in varying stages of development, from tight, deep-maroon buds to fully unfurled white and pink petals. This attention to natural cycles is a hallmark of the shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking techniques by incorporating Western influences regarding light and perspective while maintaining the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period. The print reflects the artist's deep familiarity with avian anatomy and botanical structure. By isolating the subject against a flat, monochromatic field, Koson removes extraneous detail, directing the viewer to the interaction between the bird and the flora. The balance between the dark, textured bark of the branches and the smooth, delicate nature of the petals creates a visual harmony. This work is representative of the high production standards maintained by the Watanabe Shozaburo publishing house, which collaborated with Koson to distribute these prints to an international audience. The result is a refined example of Japanese printmaking that prioritises clarity, observation, and a quiet, contemplative mood.
