A woodblock print from the Kiso Kaido series, depicting travellers near Omiya-juku with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen belongs to the series 'The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido', a collaborative project between Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige. The series documents the journey along the Kiso Kaido, an inland route connecting Edo to Kyoto. This specific sheet depicts the post station of Omiya-juku.
In the foreground, travellers navigate a path through a rural setting. A man carries a load on his back while walking past a small roadside shrine, while a group of porters transports a passenger in a palanquin. The composition draws the eye across the mid-ground, where agricultural fields stretch toward the horizon. Mount Fuji appears in the distance, its snow-capped peak rendered with characteristic restraint. The inclusion of cherry trees in bloom provides a seasonal marker, softening the lines of the terrain.
Eisen employs a palette defined by muted earth tones, contrasted against the deep blue of the foreground and the soft pink of the blossoms. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period woodblock process, with clear registration of colour blocks and fine line work. The artist balances the human activity of the road with the static presence of the mountain, a common motif in Japanese printmaking of the nineteenth century. This work offers a view into the travel culture of the era, capturing the daily movement of people through the Japanese countryside. The print is a representative example of the topographical interest that defined the later years of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus shifted toward documenting specific locations along major travel routes.
