A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, depicting travellers crossing the Okitsu River.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the seventeenth station of the Tokaido road, Okitsu. It belongs to the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, a variation of his famous travel prints that incorporates kyoka, or comic verse, into the composition. The scene captures travellers navigating the shallow waters of the Okitsu River, a common necessity for those journeying between Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period.
Hiroshige employs a clear, graphic approach to the composition. The river occupies the foreground, where figures are shown wading through the water or preparing to cross. Their forms are simplified, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythm of the crossing. Behind them, a large, craggy hill dominates the middle ground. The artist uses flat colour planes and distinct outlines to define the terrain, contrasting the soft, flowing water with the solid, angular mass of the hillside. The sky is kept minimal, allowing the calligraphic text at the top of the print to balance the visual weight of the mountain.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on shades of blue for the water and sky, paired with warm, earthy tones for the riverbank and the mountain slopes. This specific edition, featuring the kyoka poems, reflects the cultural interest in combining visual art with literary pursuits. The print provides a glimpse into the daily life of travellers in nineteenth-century Japan, documenting the physical challenges of the journey alongside the aesthetic appreciation of the route. The work is a representative example of Hiroshige's ability to capture the essence of a specific location through a combination of observation and stylisation.
