A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, featuring a woman in a patterned kimono against a coastal view of Okitsu and Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a scene from the famous Tokaido road, which connected Edo to Kyoto. Eisen, a prolific artist of the late Edo period, was known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. In this composition, a woman stands in the foreground, her kimono decorated with a bold, repeating floral pattern. She carries a small box, perhaps a portable shrine or a personal container, while looking towards the distance.
The background provides a view of the coastal station of Okitsu. The iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rises behind the mountains, while the sea and small boats occupy the middle ground. Travellers are visible on the path, adding a sense of movement to the quiet coastal setting. Eisen uses a palette dominated by blues and soft earth tones, which creates a harmonious balance between the figure and the environment.
Unlike the more traditional landscape-focused prints of the Tokaido series, this work integrates the figure into the travel narrative. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the woodblock carvers and printers of the era, who managed to capture the subtle gradations of the sky and the texture of the fabric. The composition relies on the contrast between the large, patterned figure in the foreground and the expansive, atmospheric view of the Japanese coast. This piece offers a glimpse into the popular culture of the nineteenth century, where travel and fashion were frequent subjects for artistic exploration.
