A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the Yahagi Bridge at Okazaki, featuring travellers crossing the river towards the distant castle.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the post station of Okazaki, a location on the Tōkaidō road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition focuses on the Yahagi Bridge, a structure of significant length that spans the river, guiding the viewer across the scene. Travellers, rendered with simple forms, traverse the bridge under the shelter of umbrellas, suggesting the atmospheric conditions of the journey.
Hokusai employs a structured approach to space, using the bridge as a diagonal element to create depth. The background features the distant silhouette of Okazaki Castle, nestled among rolling hills. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, relying on soft ochres, muted greens, and subtle red-brown tones to define the terrain and the architectural elements. The sky is marked by horizontal bands of colour, a technique common in the period to suggest atmospheric perspective without excessive detail.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tōkaidō route often emphasises the structural and topographical elements of the journey. The print captures the rhythm of travel, with the repetitive motion of the figures on the bridge contrasting with the stillness of the surrounding geography. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical skill required for the woodblock carving process. This work provides a view into the travel culture of the Edo period, documenting the infrastructure that supported the movement of people across the Japanese provinces. The print is an example of the artist's early mastery of composition and his ability to translate complex geographical features into a clear, graphic format suitable for mass production.
