A vibrant depiction of marine life by Itō Jakuchū, 'Octopus and Fish' showcases the artist's unique blend of realism and decorative design, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
Itō Jakuchū (1716-1800) was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period, known for his detailed and unconventional depictions of flora and fauna. Jakuchū's work broke from traditional styles, incorporating a unique blend of realism and decorative design. He is particularly celebrated for his series 'Colorful Realm of Living Beings', a set of thirty hanging scrolls created for the Shōkoku-ji temple in Kyoto. 'Octopus and Fish' exemplifies Jakuchū's distinctive approach. The composition features a variety of sea creatures, including an octopus and numerous types of fish, rendered with meticulous detail and a keen eye for natural forms. The artist's use of ink and colour on silk creates a soft, luminous effect, enhancing the lifelike quality of the subjects. The arrangement of the figures, scattered across the two panels, reflects a decorative sensibility characteristic of Ukiyo-e art, while the careful observation of each creature's anatomy demonstrates Jakuchū's commitment to realism.
