This woodblock print originates from the series 'Observations on the Opening of Yokohama' (Yokohama kaiko kenbunshi), published in 1862. Utagawa Sadahide, a student of Utagawa Kunisada, produced this work during a period of rapid social change in Japan. Following the forced opening of Japanese ports to international trade, artists began documenting the arrival of foreign powers. This specific page features a collection of international flags, including those of the United States, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, arranged around a central circular cartouche containing Japanese text.
The composition is characteristic of Yokohama-e, a sub-genre of ukiyo-e that focused on the presence of foreigners and their customs in the port city of Yokohama. The print serves as a visual record of the diplomatic and commercial shifts occurring in the mid-nineteenth century. The inclusion of the flags reflects the curiosity and anxiety surrounding the influx of Western influence. The text provides context regarding the opening of the port and the subsequent interactions between Japanese merchants and foreign traders.
Visually, the work employs a clean, graphic approach. The flags are rendered with flat colour fields and precise outlines, typical of the woodblock printing techniques of the Edo period.
