A traditional Japanese woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a French woman on horseback with a Chinese servant.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists produced these works to satisfy public curiosity regarding foreigners and their customs. The print depicts a French woman mounted on a horse, accompanied by a Chinese servant who carries a small child.
Yoshikazu employs the traditional aesthetic conventions of the Utagawa school, yet the subject matter reflects the rapid social changes occurring in mid-nineteenth-century Japan. The composition is structured with a clear focus on the figures, set against a neutral background that allows the details of their attire to remain the primary point of interest. The woman wears a bonnet and a voluminous skirt, while the servant is dressed in traditional Chinese garments. The inclusion of text, or cartouches, provides descriptive information about the foreign lands and people represented, a common feature in prints intended to educate the Japanese populace about the wider world.
The lines are precise and clean, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques of the era. The colour palette is restrained, using soft tones that complement the graphic quality of the ink outlines. This work serves as a historical document of the period, capturing the fascination with the exotic and the unfamiliar that defined the Yokohama-e movement. It offers a glimpse into how Japanese artists interpreted the arrival of Westerners and their associates during a time of significant transition. The print is a fine example of the intersection between traditional Japanese printmaking and the influx of new cultural information that arrived via the port of Yokohama.
