A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting a traveller and a labourer near Mount Fuji, taken from the Harimaze series of Joruri play scenes.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts a scene from the Numazu station of the Tokaido road. It is a section of a larger sheet from the series A Harimaze Mirror of Joruri Plays (Harimaze joruri kagami). The harimaze format involves multiple distinct images printed on a single large sheet, which were intended to be cut out and collected by the owner. This specific fragment captures a narrative moment involving two figures set against the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji.
Kuniyoshi, a master of the Utagawa school, demonstrates his ability to convey character and movement through economical line work. The figure on the right, a labourer carrying goods on a shoulder pole, is rendered with a sense of weary realism. His posture and simple attire contrast with the more composed, upright figure on the left. The background is simplified, using the mountain as a graphic anchor for the composition. The colour palette is restrained, relying on blues, greens, and muted earth tones to define the figures and the atmospheric distance of the mountain.
Joruri plays were a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, and this series often referenced popular scenes from these performances. By isolating this specific encounter, Kuniyoshi invites the viewer to consider the human element within the broader context of travel and folklore. The print reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in both the physical geography of Japan and the dramatic narratives that defined the cultural consciousness of the Edo period. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figures providing a counterpoint to the horizontal sweep of the landscape. This piece offers a glimpse into the technical skill required to produce multi-image sheets, where each segment had to function as a self-contained work of art while contributing to the overall design of the original uncut sheet.
