Mark Rothko's 'No. 2' is an abstract expressionist work featuring two large, soft-edged rectangles of grey. The monochrome palette and large scale create a meditative and contemplative viewing experience.
Mark Rothko, born in Latvia in 1903, emigrated to the United States and became a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. His work moved away from representational forms, instead exploring the emotional potential of colour and large-scale composition. Rothko aimed to create paintings that could evoke a sense of awe, spirituality, and introspection in the viewer. He achieved this through simplified forms and layered colours. 'No. 2' exemplifies Rothko's signature style. Two large, rectangular blocks of colour dominate the canvas. The upper rectangle is a lighter grey, while the lower is a darker, more intense grey. The edges of these rectangles are soft and blurred, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in the subtle gradations of colour and the sheer scale of the work. The painting's monochrome palette enhances its meditative quality, encouraging a focus on the nuances of tone and texture.
