A cityscape by Maurice Utrillo, 'Nine' depicts a view along a Parisian canal with barges, buildings, and a bridge in the distance. The painting features Utrillo's characteristic textured brushwork and muted colour palette.
Maurice Utrillo, born in Paris in 1883, is celebrated for his cityscapes, particularly his depictions of Montmartre. Utrillo's early life was marked by personal struggles, and he was encouraged to paint by his mother, the artist Suzanne Valadon, as a means of therapy. He developed a unique style characterised by its textured surfaces and muted colour palette. His works often evoke a sense of melancholy and solitude. 'Nine' presents a view along a Parisian waterway, likely the Seine, with barges in the foreground. The composition includes buildings lining the left side of the canal, a bridge in the distance, and trees along the embankment. French flags are visible atop flagpoles. Utrillo's brushwork is loose and expressive, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere. The colour scheme is dominated by greys, greens, and browns, typical of his 'white period' (c. 1909-1914), when he incorporated plaster into his paint to achieve a distinctive textural effect. The painting captures the urban environment with a raw, unidealised quality.
